Description

This Vintage-Industrial, Large, Fully-Functional, All-Steel, Roll-Top Desk is Beautiful – (a.k.a The Tanker Desk). At the turn of the century these were also considered the “Executive’s Writing Desk”, often found in small offices, professional buildings and factories. The roll-top desk was considered an important and brilliant innovation for busy work environments. A manager or secretary could close, lock and then secure, all of the private / sensitive office materials (with a simple draw of the top, and a turn of the key). It was not uncommon to see factories and work buildings with several of these desks for the management and supervisors. It was a less expensive way to adjust the size of the management team, and a more effective way of moving the staff/managers, without incurring construction costs for offices and rooms.

After the second war, these desks became more nostalgic and were common in smaller suburban offices, for a wide variety of different Professions and professionals. They were not common in the small home / office environment until after the Baby-Boomer generation retired, and then this style of desk followed many of the professionals/retirees home. Then in the 1980’s and on, U.S. furniture manufacturers started to bring to market replica’s and antique-looking versions of the classic roll-top desk, but made with less-costly materials, often wood and/or fiberboard composites.

This all metal, original roll-top desk is in fabulous working condition, it functions and looks almost new. All of the working components are in great condition, including a variety of organizers, 10 letter slots up above, two vertical side slots, two extendable writing boards (one on each side) and 5 different size drawers, including one large drawer organizer – to serve as a standard size filing drawer / cabinet.
